NOMINATORName: Deirdre Keaveney Job Title: Fundraising Manager Organisation: Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (www.guidedogs.ie )
NOMINEEName: Frank Downes Job Title: Volunteer Fundraiser Organisation: Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind
- Background and Extent of fundraising undertaken: Frank is currently enjoying his 30th year as a fundraiser for Irish Guide Dogs. His commitment to the organisation and to many blind people in Co Galway over these years has been unwavering as he has combined his fundraising work with genuine caring and responsibility for the clients of Irish Guide Dogs. Frank retired from his "paid" job four years ago and adopted Ollie a retired Guide Dog who now accompanies Frank on all his fundraising ventures and has himself become quite the personality in Galway. Ollie even starred in the Town Hall Theatre production of Annie which of course provided Frank with another fundraising opportunity. Frank's motto is "you wont get if you don't ask" and in these difficult times its proving most effective!
- Distinctiveness of the effort: As I mentioned above what makes Frank's commitment outstanding is his double dedication both to raising funds and genuinely helping, in very practical ways, blind people in the county. He never misses an opportunity to promote the organisation visiting schools, scouts, active retirement groups anyone who wants Ollie and himself to talk about Guide Dogs.
- Longevity: Frank is 30 years involved this year.
- Innovation: Through his promotional work and visits to other organisation from schools to chambers of commerce Frank and Ollie never fail to entrance their audience. Even if he particular event is not for fundraising Frank is always delighted to attend. He is a true ambassador for the organisation.
- Leading by example: Frank is known as the "Guide Dogs Man" in Galway and his efforts are continually recognised by nominations for Galway's Mayoral Awards and Galway Person of the Year nominations.
