• Background and Extent of fundraising undertaken: Grainne as a young single mother faced a huge challenge in November 2007 when her son Liam was born affected by epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a devastating skin condition.  Grainne faced up to the challenge of caring for the extensive medical and daily nursing care of her baby but became driven to be part of the fight for a cure for her son.  Grainne undertook a major fundraising campaign that captured the hearts and pockets of the community of Three Mile House, Monaghan and as a result through her efforts and those in the community inspired by Liam's story, some €40,000 was raised for DEBRA Ireland.

• Distinctiveness of the effort: Apart from the huge amount raised through the inspiration and efforts of one person, Grainne's achievement is a beacon for others.  Raising funds is a huge challenge, but Grainne has shown that it can be done despite having no fundraising experience or resources, just with determination and sheer hard work.

• Longevity: Grainne has been involved with DEBRA Ireland for approximately 20 months, shortly after the birth of her son, Liam.

• Innovation: Grainne has secured the support from the town of Three Mile House to DEBRA Ireland.  Previously, they would not have known of the charity, now they have become part of the DEBRA community.  Grainne has also generously shared Liam's story with the wider community by allowing his story to be told in a promotional flyer "Blisters at bedtime" and for Liam to feature on fundraising materials and in media interviews.  These have all benefited in building awareness of the condition and DEBRA Ireland to a wider audience.

• Leading by example: Grainne's efforts are an inspiration to others affected by EB and has encouraged the active involvement of others affected by EB in fundraising.
  This is the first time that Grainne has been nominated for an award.
